‘We’re only human’ is something we tell ourselves to excuse mistakes and slip ups. We tell ourselves mistakes are only natural and we all make them. Now, we do make mistakes this is true, we all slip up from time to time (if you don’t let me know cause I’d love to learn), however a Christian is not ‘only human’.
It would seem from the context it is used that when people say they are only human, what they mean is either that they fail sometimes, or sin sometimes, or make honest mistakes. Perhaps there is a deeper level where a person saying this is admitting they are sinful? Perhaps that is a conversation for another time, but on the topic I do recommend reading unapologetic by Francis Spufford (be warned, contains strong themes and language).
A Christian is human, this is true. 100% all Christians that have ever lived have been human. However is a christian only human? I suggest not. 1 Corinthians 6:19 and 3:16 tell us that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, that God’s spirit dwells within you. Romans 8:10 tells us Christ is within us, and Colossians 2:9 tells us in Christ is the fullness of God. 1 Corinthians 6:17 says that ‘whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit’.
On the outside you may appear to be only human. Just a sack of biological marvels which falls under the category of ‘alive’ and has somehow attained self awareness. On the inside however, you are far far more. Those who have accepted Jesus into their hearts walk with the fullness of God inside of them. In Matthew 5:14 Jesus tells his disciples they they are the light of the world. God shines through you because he lives in you.
Don’t put yourself down thinking you are only human, because you are not, you are special and were bought at the highest price. God dwells within you dearly beloved. We make mistakes, but God strengthens us and teaches us not to keep making the same ones. You are a spiritual being, there is more than meets the eye. Let your true identity be known through your actions and words, but most important through love. Today’s picture is bury, but it does show light through darkness, this is what Christians are on the earth. Be encouraged dear ones. You aren’t only human, you aren’t alone, you are full of light.
God Bless you and keep you always.
